Ret. S.Sgt. James H.J. GILLIS
(January 31, 1951 - June 17, 2017)
In the early hours of June 17th, while surrounded by loved ones, Jimmie passed away after courageously facing a brief illness.
Born and raised in Iona, Cape Breton, Jimmie carried his Gaelic roots and Scottish heritage with him wherever he went. He was gifted in the Celtic tradition of storytelling; regaling many a visitor with amusing anecdotes over a dram of scotch. It was common that after visiting the Gillis household, a person would walk away feeling as though they were embraced as part of the family, or an “honourary Gilli”.
He retired after spending 32 years with the RCMP; his years split equally serving communities in B Division (Newfoundland) and H Division (Nova Scotia). He held many fond memories of his time in Grand Bank, Glovertown, Pasadena, Baie Verte, and Tantallon. In his retirement years, some of his proudest moments came while serving as Drum Major with the H Division Pipes and Drums alongside his wife Lily, a bagpiper.

A natural environmentalist, he enjoyed instilling in his grandkids an appreciation for nature: birdwatching, teaching them about their environment, or discussing the plight of the bees. Often speaking to them in Gaelic, he beamed with pride when they would respond in with the same. When not at home, he could often be found on the sidelines of any rugby game. A man of great faith, he dedicated much of his time to his parish community; serving in the Knights of Columbus, singing in the choir, and as a sponsor in the RCIA program.
Jimmie will be missed by all those who knew him. He is survived by wife Lily, Tantallon; children Jennifer (Daniel), Kentville, Janine (Eoin) Hussey, Albert Bridge, Angeline (Donald) MacLennan, Dartmouth, John Hugh (Carrie), Whitehorse, Jacinta, Dartmouth, Stephanie (Jeremy), Kingston; grandchildren, Brenna, Brogan, Marleau, Ari, James, and two whose arrivals he was eagerly anticipating; siblings Kevin, Roddie, Maria, Janet, Cathy, Carmel, Johnnie and their families. He was predeceased by parents Neil John and Marge, parents-in-law, Willie and Mildred MacNeil, sister, Barbara Thomas, and niece, Shauna Gillis.
Wake to be at Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Upper Tantallon Friday, June 23rd from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral Saturday, June 24th at 1:00 pm at St Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish, Upper Tantallon. A Ceilidh reception to follow at 4:00 pm at St Margaret’s Community Center, Upper Tantallon for anyone wishing to share a memory and raise a parting glass. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jimmie's memory may be made to Chalice or an organization of one's choice.

Lawrence Thomas Watson Griffin - It is with great sadness that we the family of Lawrence Griffin, announce his passing on June 20, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Larry was the son of the late Thomas and Gladys (Johnston) Griffin. Larry also held a special place in his heart for Glady McAfee who he considered to be a second mother.
Although he made his final home in Cape Breton, after he graduated from Saint John High School in 1956, a career in the RCMP beckoned and Larry found himself stationed all over Canada but every year he made the trek back to his home in St John, New Brunswick where he would meet his sister and spend most of his time with Scott and Joan Ross and their son Andrew.
Larry was an avid sports fan and could always be heard cheering for his favorite teams the Ottawa Senators and Ohio State Buckeyes. He always had a story to be told to his friends at Tracie’s Spa and even at breakfast with anyone one that would join him with his usual companions Donnie Mackenzie and Linda Poole. When not listening to Celtic Women and the Boston Pops, Larry could be found at the Day’s Inn gym just relaxing by the hot tub.
Larry always remembered his family and friends, no matter where they lived and would do anything for them especially his niece Rebecca Fever.
He will be lovingly missed by his wife, Ruth (Maxwell) Griffin; daughter, Carol Ann (Derek) Francis and his step-grandchildren Dejiah Lynn, Derek Jr. and Kevin. He is also survived by his sister, Iona (Bob) Staples and their children, Laurie (Joe) Ritchie and Dave (Deb) Staples and their families.
A special thanks to all the staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for taking care of him in his last days and a very special thank you to Dr. Mohen and Mabel Ann Virick for all the support they gave us over the past number of months and years.
Cremation has taken place.
Visitation will be held on Monday June 26, 2017 from 2-4 p.m., at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney with a celebration of life to follow at 4 p.m. In the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev Sheldon Chant Officiating.

Mark Hamilton McKinleyIt is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mark Hamilton McKinley age 54 of Dartmouth, on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the QEII with family by his side.
Born in Windsor, ON he was the son of the late Florence and S/Sgt. George McKinley.
Mark was most recently the NCO i/c Federal Policing Ops Support for "H" Division. Mark has served with the RCMP for more than 29 years. His career spanned service in "E" Division Traffic Services then serving in "H" Division at Barrington Detachment, before being transferred to the National Behavioural Science Branch in Ottawa. Mark was a recipient of the Long Service Medal with bronze clasp for his police service and was a dedicated representative of the organization.
Mark was a resilient child who taught us all what strength really was by conquering cancer at the age of 8. In 1973 Mark and family moved to Dartmouth from Cape Breton, this Is when Mark set the goal to be a RCMP Member.
Being the oldest child, it was thrust upon Mark to become a co-support for his mother in raising his sisters and brother. All the while going to school full time, working full time and obtaining his pilots License. Mark never complained about these responsibilities.
Mark’s dreams were realized when he received a letter to be in Regina and become a part of Troop 13, of the RCMP in 1986.
Mark was a HUGE kid at heart, he loved Christmas (the more presents the better), He loved family, loved to travel, and loved Flying. Mark recently joined the RCMP Veterans, though he felt he was too young. During Mark’s University years he was fondly referred to as “Milk and Cookies” as he was always the Designated Driver. Once joining the force he was referred to as “Spike” a name that still follows him.

The best chapter of Mark’s life began when he met Cheryl Malcolm. Their love and dedication for each other was evident to anyone who knew them. Together they built a life that valued family and friends. Cheryl spent the last 3 months rarely leaving Mark’s side while he was in the hospital. Now we are confident that Mark will not leave Cheryl’s side.

Mark is survived by his wife Cheryl, step-daughter Jessica, sisters Beth and Jean, brother Mike, grand-children Julia and Wayne, nieces Tabitha, Jade, Katrina, Amanda, Savannah, and nephews Stephen, Coady, Zachery, Travis, and Tyler.

Perry, Anthony Arthur "Tony", 57, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL, formerly of Antigonish, NS.  It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Inspector Anthony Arthur "Tony" Perry. Known to some as a neighbour, others as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, he was first and foremost a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Born on the West Coast of Newfoundland in 1959, Tony spent his childhood enjoying the outdoors and building the skills that would define him as a handyman and "jack of all trades." After graduating from high school, he completed a diploma in cabinetmaking and worked construction on several major projects across Newfoundland. In 1988, Tony was accepted to the RCMP and began his almost 30 year career as a Police Officer. As he made his way through the ranks, Tony was an icon in the communities where he lived. He sat on committees, volunteered with sporting organizations and offered a helping hand to others in any way he could. Tony loved to travel, and he and his high school sweetheart Heather made beautiful memories touring the world. From Times Square to Stonehenge to his favourite beach in St. Marten, Tony could strike up a conversation and make a friend wherever he went. Tony was a known "fixer" who helped to peacefully resolve countless conflicts, such as the armed standoff he negotiated for which he was presented the Commanding Officer's Award of Excellence. From 1988 to 2003, Tony served as a constable on all Units at Antigonish Detachment as well as in the Northeast Nova Major Crime Unit. In 2003, he was promoted to Corporal and served as the Detachment Commander in Inverness. He returned to Antigonish in 2006 as a Sergeant in the role of Operational Non-Commissioned Officer. In 2008 he was promoted again to Staff Sergeant and held the positions of District Commander for Antigonish and the District Advisory Non-Commissioned Officer. In August of 2015, Tony achieved the goal he set for himself in 1988 and joined the Commissioned Ranks of the RCMP as the Inspector for Labrador District, posted in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL. He was truly a dedicated police officer who thrived in his uniform and maintained the rights and safety of the people and communities he served. Tony was so proud of his daughters, who were driven by his encouragement and "Poppy" was idolized by his grandchildren.

Tony is survived by his loving wife Heather and daughters Melanie (Jason) Marchand and Melissa (Tom) Halford, as well as three "main men" and one "princess" - his precious grandchildren Ben and Luke Marchand and Violet and Douglas Halford. He is also survived by his mother, Marjorie Laing, brother William (Rose), sisters Linda (Cecil) Byrne, Jean Bursey, brothers-in-law Alec (Terri) and Bill (Judy) Murdoch, sisters-in-law Diane Murdoch and Allison (Grant) Peyton, special aunt and uncle Bern and Sandra Adey and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his father Garfield and parents-in-law Jack and Lillian Murdoch.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 7-9pm and Friday 2-4pm and 7-9pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St. Antigonish. A United Church Funeral Service will be hosted in St. Ninian Cathedral on Saturday at 1:00pm, Reverend Peter Smith presiding. Burial at a later date.

He was our leader, our teacher, and our anchor. May he sleep peacefully. Donations can be made in his honour to the "B" Div. Fallen Members Fund. Online condolences:

Folks, please note the message from Ralph Pietersma advising of the death of fellow Associate Member, Elaine Grant, wife of Gil Grant.  More details will follow when received.  You may recall Ralph made a special effort to have Elaine inducted as an Associate member during the March General Meeting, hoping to have this accomplished and the pin presented to her before her passing. I have attached a copy of the Minutes of that meeting.
